Abashiri Hotels Overview: Lakeside Onsen or JR Abashiri Station?

Abashiri accommodation basically comes down to two choices: onsen resort hotels on Lake Abashiri, or business hotels in front of JR Abashiri Station. The two are completely different in character, and choosing wrong directly affects how efficient your winter itinerary is.

The lakeside area is on the west side of town and is an onsen district. Hotels are large, mostly with dinner and breakfast included, and let you soak in open-air baths with snow views. The downside is that it is some distance from town and the icebreaker ship pier, so you rely on hotel shuttles. The good news is that during drift ice season, most lakeside hotels run shuttles to and from JR Abashiri Station or the icebreaker pier, so just confirm the schedule before you go.

The area in front of JR Abashiri Station works on a different logic: you arrive the moment you exit the station, and a few steps away are the stops for the airport bus and the sightseeing loop bus, so there is no shuttle worry when you need to catch the icebreaker ship early the next morning. Prices are clearly lower than lakeside onsen hotels, and some business hotels even have public baths, so your onsen needs can be met cheaply too.

Below we group 11 Abashiri accommodations into four sets. Most hotels’ official sites do not publish fixed room rates, and the February drift ice season is usually the most expensive and hardest time of year to book, so please go by each hotel’s official site or booking platform on the day for actual prices.

Abashiri Hotel Selection Guide and Drift Ice Season Booking Reminders

Abashiri’s accommodation capacity is small, and peak season is extremely concentrated in February, so your booking strategy almost decides how smoothly the trip goes. Check the points below before you reserve.

Book Four to Six Months Ahead for February: Drift Ice Season Rooms Are Extremely Tight

February is the best time each year to see drift ice in Abashiri, and the Drift Ice Festival is usually also held in early February. During this period, rooms are extremely tight at both station-front business hotels and lakeside onsen hotels. We recommend finishing your booking 4 to 6 months ahead; the later you book, the higher the price and the fewer the choices.

If you cannot get a room, there are three alternatives: shift your dates a week or two earlier or later, look at small lodgings such as guesthouses, or move your stay to a nearby town such as Kitami or Shari at Shiretoko and take the JR to Abashiri. Locking in a room once you decide your icebreaker date is the most critical step of any Abashiri trip.

Lakeside or Station Front? First Check Whether You Have a Car

If you do not have a car, hotels in front of the station and in town are almost always more practical. Toyoko Inn and Route Inn are directly across from JR Abashiri Station, with the stops for the airport bus and the sightseeing loop bus at the door; Dormy Inn Abashiri is right next to Abashiri Bus Terminal, making your departure smoother.

Lakeside onsen hotels do offer better views and onsen experiences, and most have shuttles to and from the station or icebreaker pier in drift ice season. But shuttles run on fixed schedules, usually need a reservation, and make it hard to get back into town at night. If you stay at the lake, ask for the shuttle timetable when you book.

Want an Onsen but Also Want to Save Money? Station-Front Hotels Have Public Baths Too

Many people assume that to soak in an onsen in Abashiri you must stay at a lakeside onsen hotel, but that is not the case. Hotel Route-Inn Abashiri Ekimae has an artificial hot spring public bath, “Tabibito no Yu,” and Dormy Inn Abashiri has a top-floor natural hot spring public bath. Both have room rates far below lakeside resort hotels.

Want an Onsen but Also Want to Save Money? Station-Front Hotels Have Public Baths Too

In winter Abashiri, being able to return to the hotel for a soak in a public bath makes a big difference to your energy the next day, especially after an hour on the icebreaker’s deck in the sea wind. If your budget is limited but you still want an onsen, prioritizing these two hotels is better value than forcing a lakeside stay.
