Nara Cherry Blossom Season: A Complete Guide to Japan’s Most Spectacular Hanami Spots
With more than 1,300 years of history, Nara becomes one of the most spectacular cherry blossom destinations in the country every spring.
In Nara City, Somei Yoshino cherry trees typically begin blooming in late March and reach full bloom in early April, making it a must-visit spring destination.
Nara Cherry Blossom Timing and Peak Bloom

In Nara City, Somei Yoshino cherry trees typically start to open in late March and reach full bloom in early April, with the best viewing period lasting until mid-April.
At Mt. Yoshino, the blossoms open from low to high: Shimo Senbon (Lower), Naka Senbon (Middle), Kami Senbon (Upper) and Oku Senbon (Inner). Cherry blossoms can typically be seen from early April to early May, so you can stagger your visit to avoid the crowds.

Cherry Varieties and What to Expect in Each Area

Mt. Yoshino is dominated by mountain cherry (Yamazakura), with about 30,000 trees blooming together in the famous “Hitome Senbon” view of a thousand trees at a glance. The blossoms around Nara Park open earlier than those on Mt. Yoshino.
The Koriyama Castle Ruins are a well-known cherry blossom spot in Nara Prefecture, where the blossoms set off the castle’s stone walls and moat beautifully.
The Matabei Sakura is more than 300 years old and stands alone in the middle of the fields. Its weeping branches in the light of sunrise look dreamlike, making it a favorite with photographers.
Mt. Yoshino Cherry Blossoms: The Bloom Order from Shimo Senbon to Oku Senbon
Mt. Yoshino is dominated by mountain cherry, with about 200 varieties and 30,000 trees spread across four areas: Shimo Senbon, Naka Senbon, Kami Senbon and Oku Senbon. They bloom in order from the lower elevations to the higher ones. Oku Senbon sits at more than 700 meters, over 500 meters higher than Shimo Senbon, and blossoms can typically be seen somewhere on the mountain from early April to early May, so you can choose different areas to fit your itinerary.
Hanami Tip: Night Illumination on Mt. Yoshino

Mt. Yoshino holds a night cherry blossom illumination every blossom season. In 2026 it runs from March 20 to April 19, from 18:00 to 22:00 each night. Actual dates may change depending on the bloom; for details, contact the Yoshinoyama Tourist Association (0746-34-2522).
Lit up at night, the blossoms take on a golden glow, making this the signature evening event on Mt. Yoshino. It gets cold on the mountain after dark, so bring a jacket.
