Fukuoka Tenjin Shopping Guide: Kyushu’s Biggest Shopping Paradise Explained

Tenjin is Kyushu’s largest shopping area, gathering department stores such as Daimaru, Iwataya and Mitsukoshi along with the new landmark ONE FUKUOKA BLDG. You can see nearly all of it within a 10-minute walk, making it ideal for a half-day to full-day shopping itinerary.
In 2026 Tenjin is undergoing a major reorganization and upgrade. Besides ONE FUKUOKA BLDG., which opened in April 2025 and connects directly to Tenjin Station on the subway, Fukuoka PARCO will close at the end of February 2027, Shintencho Shopping Street will close shop by shop before spring 2027, and the Tenjin Inachika South Side dining district opened on August 4, 2026, so the flow and brand lineup of the whole district are changing quickly.
Whether you are a practical traveler who wants to buy drugstore goods and electronics in one go, or a fashion lover chasing international luxury and Japanese streetwear brands, Tenjin has what you need.
Department stores, the underground mall and the new buildings are mostly linked by underground passages or skybridges, so you can move indoors the whole way even on rainy days.
ONE FUKUOKA BLDG.: Fukuoka’s New Department-Store-Class Landmark, with Tenjin’s Luxury and Functional Brands in One Place
This mixed-use building, directly connected to Tenjin Station on the subway, is the most talked-about new landmark in Tenjin in 2026.
Floors B2 to 5 hold more than 120 shops and restaurants, among them large flagship stores of Snow Peak and Salomon, while the first floor has international luxury brands such as CHANEL.
Purchases at designated shops can be combined for tax refund processing, so you do not need to queue separately, which makes it a good start or end point for a Tenjin shopping itinerary.
Important change to the tax-free system: From November 1, 2026, Japan will replace the current “tax-free at purchase” system with a departure-time refund system (Refund method): you pay the tax-inclusive price at checkout, and the tax is refunded after customs confirms you took the goods out of the country when you leave. The distinction between consumables and general goods and the ¥500,000 limit will also be abolished. The tax-free counter and on-the-spot tax deduction procedures described below apply to the period before the change, so please check the latest rules before you go.

The corridor is designed in the style of a 19th-century European street, with its stone-paved path and retro street lamps as the main features.
2026 marks its 50th anniversary (it opened in September 1976).
The underground mall connects directly to Tenjin Station and Tenjin-Minami Station and links seamlessly to major department stores such as Daimaru, Mitsukoshi and Iwataya, so you can stay indoors the whole way on rainy days or in extreme heat. Located in the heart of the district, Don Quijote Fukuoka Tenjin Main Store spans six floors from the first basement level to the fifth floor, with drugstore goods, snacks, electronics and souvenirs all under one roof. Being open 24 hours makes it the best choice for late-night restocking or a last shopping stop before an early flight.
Foreign visitors who spend ¥10,000 or more can get an additional 5% to 7% off with in-store coupons, and tax-free service is also offered (from November 1, 2026 this changes to paying the tax-inclusive price first and getting a refund when leaving the country), making it the closing stop of many Tenjin day trips.

How to Get to Fukuoka Tenjin’s Shopping Route: A Complete Guide to Transport and Costs
Tenjin Chikagai, Tenjin subway station and the Daimaru and Mitsukoshi department stores are clustered in the core of Tenjin, and getting there is simple and easy to understand whether you start from Hakata Station, Fukuoka Airport or a nearby city. Below are the four most common ways to arrive; work out the fares and times before you set out so your shopping trip goes more smoothly.
Getting to Tenjin: Subway, Bus, Taxi and Walking at a Glance
Subway Kuko Line: About 5 minutes from Hakata Station to Tenjin Station, fare ¥210; from Fukuoka Airport Station to Tenjin Station the fare is ¥260. It is the fastest choice and unaffected by traffic, with trains about every 3-5 minutes.
Nishitetsu Bus: From April 1, 2026, an express bus runs from the international terminal directly to the Nishitetsu Tenjin Highway Bus Terminal, taking about 30 to 40 minutes, fare ¥500 (¥480 with an IC card).
There is no direct service to Tenjin from the domestic terminal, so you need to take the subway or transfer at Hakata. If you have a lot of luggage, the bus is less tiring than hauling bags on the subway.
Taxi: From Fukuoka Airport to Tenjin takes about 20 minutes, with fares of about ¥1,500-2,000. It suits late-night arrivals or groups splitting the fare, and the airport taxi stand is right outside the arrivals hall.
On foot: Tenjin Chikagai is about 590 meters long and links Tenjin Station, Mitsukoshi, Daimaru, IMS and other malls. It is air-conditioned all the way, so you are protected from sun and rain, and it is the most time-saving way to get around while shopping, with no extra transport cost.

How Does Tax Refund Work at Tenjin Chikagai? Tax-Free Shop Conditions and Map Lookup
Tenjin Chikagai has no unified tax refund counter; instead, some shops handle tax-free sales individually. The “Tax Free” page on the official website lists about 50 participating shops, such as Cath Kidston, JILL by JILLSTUART and Sense of Place by URBAN RESEARCH, along with shop location numbers in the form “East/West Street No. X, Unit X,” and by checking them against the official “Tenchika MAP” you can quickly find the shop.
- Conditions: Spend ¥5,000 or more before tax at each shop (also ¥5,000 or more for consumables), and amounts at different shops cannot be combined
- Eligibility: Limited to “non-residents” such as foreign tourists visiting Japan; passports and other requirements should be confirmed with each shop
- Hours: Shops 10:00-20:00, restaurants 10:00-21:00 (some shops differ)
Also note that from November 1, 2026, Japan switches to a “refund system (Refund method)”: you pay the tax-inclusive price at checkout, and the tax is refunded only after customs confirms you took the goods out when you leave the country. The actual refund method at each shop is as announced by that shop.
Fukuoka PARCO: A Young People’s Paradise of Streetwear and Anime Goods
Fukuoka PARCO connects directly to Tenjin Station on the subway and is the spot in Tenjin with the highest concentration of fashion and general goods. Popular Japanese women’s brands such as SNIDEL and Kastane have shops here, and it also has Kyushu’s only Crayon Shin-chan specialty store and an official Chiikawa store, a pilgrimage site anime fans cannot miss.
One thing to note is that Fukuoka PARCO will close at the end of February 2027 to be demolished and rebuilt. The new facility is expected to open in the 2030s, and whether the current brands will return is still under review.
Visiting in 2026 is effectively your last chance before demolition. The basement dining area has Gokumiya hamburg steak and Menya Kanetora tsukemen, so you can stop for a meal when you get tired of shopping.

Daimaru Fukuoka Tenjin: The Top Choice for Tax Refunds and Souvenir Shopping
Daimaru Fukuoka Tenjin is a leading traditional department store, covering international luxury brands, Japanese fashion and an underground food hall.
Its biggest strength is the complete range of souvenirs, and almost any local specialty you could not buy at the airport can be picked up here.
The tax refund counters are grouped together and the procedure is clear, making it a good place to restock before leaving the country. Department stores usually charge a handling fee of about 1.55% for tax refunds, so if that matters to you, compare independent shops that charge no fee.

Iwataya (Main Building and New Building): The Luxury and Beauty Base, with SHOPPING COUPON Discounts
Iwataya is Fukuoka’s base for luxury and beauty, divided into the “Main Building” featuring high-end luxury brands and the trend-oriented “New Building.”

- 🚉 The tax-free counter is on the 7th floor of the New Building
The former Guest Card stopped being issued on March 25, 2025 and has been replaced by the SHOPPING COUPON.
Items under ¥3,000, sale items, food and restaurants, gift certificates, and brands such as Rolex, Hermès, Cartier and Tiffany are mostly excluded.

Iwataya Tax Refund Fee and Procedure: The 7th-Floor Tax-Free Counter in the New Building
Tax-free procedures at the Iwataya main store are handled at the “tax-free counter” on the 7th floor of the New Building, with acceptance hours of 10:00-19:45 announced on the official website. According to Iwataya’s official tax-free explanation (March 2026 edition), the tax refund handling fee is 1.55% of the tax-free goods amount, and the actual refund is the difference between the tax-inclusive and pre-tax prices minus the handling fee. Returns are not accepted once the procedure is completed.
- You must go to the counter in person on the day of purchase, and general goods and consumables each require a pre-tax total of ¥5,000 or more for the day
- Bring: the goods, your passport (with a valid entry stamp) or Visit Japan Web, the receipt (handwritten receipts are not accepted), and the card used for payment
- The name on the passport must match the receipt and the card; if you passed through the automated gate and have no entry stamp in your passport, you cannot be processed
- Gold, platinum and other precious metals and some counters are excluded
The above is the procedure under the current “on-the-spot tax-free” system. After Japan switches to the refund system on November 1, 2026, Iwataya’s refund method and fees have not yet been published on its website, so we recommend confirming at the counter before you shop.
mina Tenjin: Kyushu’s Largest UNIQLO and GU Combined Floors
mina Tenjin is the top choice for fans of affordable fashion and household goods. Its UNIQLO (floors 1-2) and GU (floor 3) are each the largest in Kyushu, on separate floors, with a more complete range of styles and sizes than ordinary branches and frequent Kyushu-limited collaborations.
The building also has Kyushu’s largest LOFT, a JINS eyewear specialty store and a Seria 100-yen shop (MUJI is not in mina Tenjin; Kyushu’s largest MUJI is at Tenjin Shoppers Fukuoka), so you can stock up on affordable clothing, eyewear and small household items in one stop, which suits travelers with a limited budget who want to buy in volume.

Shintencho Shopping Street: A Showa-Era Nostalgic Mechanical Clock Tower (Shops Closing Gradually Before Spring 2027)

The street has a mechanical clock tower called the “Märchen Chime,” 17 meters tall and installed in 1981, with a puppet show on the hour, a popular corner for photos.
There are about 100 long-established local shops here, including general goods, Japanese confectionery and clothing shops, with prices more affordable than the surrounding department stores.
Shintencho hours and closing schedule: The shopping street has no unified hours; each shop sets its own, so check the shop list on the official website before you go.
Because of redevelopment, shops will close their current locations one by one before spring 2027, after a thank-you ceremony on February 14, 2027, and some shops will temporarily move to Solaria Stage. If you want to see it, go before February 2027.

Shops in Daimyo are smaller and each has its own style, so it suits travelers who like treasure hunting and individual pieces to browse slowly. The pace is also much more relaxed than at the large department stores, and it is the corner of Tenjin where you can best feel local fashion culture.

How Much Does a Fukuoka Tenjin Shopping Trip Cost? Tickets and Deals Roundup
When planning a Fukuoka Tenjin shopping trip, besides setting aside a shopping budget, the costs of transport, connectivity and tickets for nearby attractions actually make up a considerable share of travel expenses. Booking transport tickets, data SIM cards and transfer services on KKday or Klook in advance not only saves time queuing at counters but also lets you confirm prices and itinerary details first. Below are several tickets and deals that go best with a Tenjin shopping trip, so you can spend your time and budget where it counts and shop through hot spots such as Tenjin Chikagai, Daimaru Fukuoka Tenjin and PARCO with peace of mind.
Fukuoka Airport to Tenjin/Hakata City Transfer Service: A Time-Saving Way to Get Straight to Your Hotel on Landing
Both the international and domestic terminals of Fukuoka Airport are very close to the city, but if you are carrying a lot of luggage and want to reach the Tenjin district quickly, drop your bags and start shopping, booking an airport transfer in advance is much easier than lugging bags onto the subway yourself. These services usually include a private car pickup at a designated time, with the driver waiting in the arrivals hall holding a sign, and the ride takes about 15 to 25 minutes to hotels around Tenjin or Hakata Station.
Prices depend on the vehicle type and number of passengers, and the actual cost is as shown on the booking page. For families or groups splitting the fare it is actually quite good value, and it spares you the trouble of working out bus and subway transfers. We especially recommend it for travelers with elders, children or a lot of luggage, so that on landing day you can head straight to Tenjin Chikagai and start shopping without wasting precious travel time.

Fukuoka City Subway One-Day Pass: Unlimited Rides to Tenjin, Hakata and Ohori Park
Fukuoka’s shopping and sightseeing spots are mostly concentrated along the subway lines, and stations such as Tenjin, Hakata, Ohori Park and Yakuin are all within the one-day pass coverage. This one-day pass allows unlimited rides on the three subway lines within the designated area, costs about ¥640 (about US$4), and pays for itself if you ride four or more times in a day, making it ideal for travelers planning cross-district itineraries like “Tenjin Chikagai in the morning, Canal City Hakata in the afternoon, and a stroll in Ohori Park in the evening.”

Purchase options are quite flexible. You can buy on the spot from ticket machines at Fukuoka Airport, Hakata Station or Tenjin Station, or reserve an e-ticket or voucher in advance through platforms such as KKday and Klook and simply redeem it on arrival, sparing you the trouble of figuring out Japanese ticket machine interfaces. For travelers with limited time who want to link several shopping spots and sights in one day, this ticket is a high-value choice.
Tosu Premium Outlets Shopping Shuttle Day Trip: A New Outlet Shopping Option Beyond Tenjin
If Tenjin Chikagai and the department store brands are not enough for you, Tosu Premium Outlets is a very popular shopping extension on the outskirts of Fukuoka, about 40 minutes by car from Hakata Station, gathering more than 150 domestic and international brands from Coach and Kate Spade to Japanese casual labels, with discounts that are usually steeper than at city-center counters. Shuttle bus tours booked through KKday or Klook depart from fixed points at Hakata Station or around Tenjin, with a one-way ride of about 40 to 50 minutes, and the packages that include a round-trip ticket plus free shopping time are priced as shown on the booking page.
The itinerary usually allows 4 to 6 hours of free shopping time, enough to see most of the zones carefully, and you do not need to worry about return connections because the package tours already include a fixed round-trip timetable. For travelers who want to avoid Tenjin’s holiday crowds and buy international luxury or outdoor brands at better prices, this is a shopping extension well worth adding.

Fukuoka Data SIM / Pocket WiFi Booking: Essential Gear for Checking Deals While You Shop
When shopping in Tenjin, a stable internet connection is an indispensable tool for checking shop discount information in real time, comparing prices, translating product labels or using map navigation. We recommend booking a Japan data SIM card or pocket WiFi on KKday or Klook before you leave, with airport counter pickup being the most convenient, so you can insert the card or switch on the device right after clearing arrivals at Fukuoka Airport.
Common plans include a 5-day 4GB SIM card priced at about US$8 to US$13, or a shared pocket WiFi device rented for about US$3 to US$5 per day, suitable for friends or families splitting the cost. With a stable connection, you can look up the latest Tenjin Chikagai deals at any time while shopping, compare Daimaru’s and PARCO’s promotions of the day, and even use a translation app to talk with staff about sizes or tax refunds, making the whole shopping trip smoother and more efficient.
Where to Stay Near Fukuoka Tenjin? Recommended Areas to Book

Where to Stay Around Tenjin: Prioritizing Shopping Convenience
If you want to maximize your shopping time, we suggest choosing a hotel within a 10-minute walk of Tenjin Station or Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, so that as soon as you step out in the morning you connect seamlessly to the underground mall and the big department stores, and when you shop until closing you can quickly walk back to your room to drop off your bags. If transport hub convenience matters and you also want to cater to Shinkansen transfers around Hakata Station, consider the area between Tenjin and Hakata Station, with both within a 10-minute subway ride, balancing shopping and transport convenience.
